The Backstory

It didn’t take the team long to research the claims of paranormal activity. The haunted history of the Atlantic Hotel is as highly publicized as the hotel itself. There are articles and blog posts aplenty. The hotel’s haunts have also made it into books about East Coast hauntings, and it’s a popular stop for the local ghost walking tour. Most of the stories are the stuff of urban legends now, having been retold and exaggerated for so long.

The front desk, which is right off the ballroom, has often been featured in articles, as it seemed to be a location of frequent activity, or so the reports indicated. The clerks that staff the office reported being the unwitting victims of ghostly pranks. Sometimes the adding machine seemed to take on a life of its own. It would start adding numbers, paper tape rolling, when there was no one operating it. Lights would suddenly turn off, leaving the clerk in the dark to flounder for the light switch. This never happened, however, when a guest was waiting for service, but only when the clerk was alone in the room. In the spirit of commerce, perhaps business was not to be interrupted.

The ballroom also had a haunted reputation. Supposedly, ghostly piano music was sometimes reported when there was no one at the aging keyboards. Staff often reported feeling a presence in the room.

One of the most well-known legends about the place is the death of a little girl who supposedly fell out a window in one of the corner rooms of the second floor. The hotel’s most famous ghost is that of the little sprite, who is now believed to haunt the second floor. Guests and staff have reported hearing the sounds of childish giggles and what is theorized to be the sounds of a tricycle being ridden up and down the hall.

After working alone late one night, a night clerk, Barbara, reported distinctly hearing what sounded like something being moved across the floor above her. She went up to the second floor to investigate the noise but found nothing out of the ordinary. It happened several more times. Barbara would hear the noise of something being moved from one end of the hall to the other, but upon investigating the noise, could never find the source. She finally brought the topic up with another employee of the hotel, who said that they believed it was the sound of the little girl ghost riding her tricycle.

Staff members, especially those who worked the night shift, reported hearing things like footsteps in the hall, especially on nights when they were closing up and no one else was around. And some reported seeing shadowy figures in the second-floor hall.

The grand staircase right off the ballroom had also seen its share of publicity. It is the spot of one of the most preposterous stories about the hotel—an urban legend right out of Poltergeist. According to the story, a staff member was one day ascending the stairs from the first floor to the second floor in order to retrieve some supplies.
